It was as if King had become bored with the characters and was writing only to fulfil a contractual agreement. It was ridiculously far fetched with no real suspense, no shocks, no unexpected twists or turns and next to no new character development. I found 'End of Watch' to be far below average, in fact for a Stephen King novel it was outright lazy. Which leads us to this final chapter of the trilogy: 'End of Watch'. The second instalment was distinctly average having lost the dark edge of its predecessor. The first novel Mr Mercedes was brilliant, dark, brooding and full of suspense. This trilogy has steadily declined over the three novels released. ![]() ![]() ![]() The chapters in this book are definitely interrelated, but each one represents one particular episode out of the Austins’ lives. It is only when they must face the possibility that Maggy might return to her surviving blood relatives that they realize how much a member of the family she really has become. ![]() ![]() Maggy is a brat when she arrives, and it takes the family a while to warm up to her. The lives of the four Austin kids - John, Vicky, Suzy, and Rob - are upset when their uncle and his co-pilot are killed in a crash, and the co-pilot’s daughter, Maggy, comes to live with the Austins. While I associate L’Engle with science fiction, this first novel about the Austins is completely realistic. After reading Meet the Austins, I’m really looking forward to the rest. This means, when I do finally finish this task, I will have read Meet the Austins, A Wrinkle In Time, The Moon By Night, The Arm of the Starfish, The Young Unicorns, A Wind in the Door, Dragons in the Waters, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, A Ring of Endless Light, A House Like a Lotus, Many Waters, An Acceptable Time, and Troubling a Star. I’ve decided that the best way to remedy this situation is to read the interconnected Murray-O’Keefe and Austin novels in the order in which they were published. I have read several Madeleine L’Engle novels as an adult, but I’ve never made my way through the entirety of any of her series. ![]() ![]() ![]() As he recounts in his new book, Organic: A Journalist's Quest to Discover the Truth Behind Food Labeling, he interrogated store managers, distributors and the company that certified the beans as organic. So Laufer tried to find out exactly where those products came from. "I've done a lot of work in the former Soviet bloc, and when you look at the 'corrupt-o-meter,' it doesn't get much worse than Kazakhstan," he says. Two products recently caught Laufer's attention when they showed up in his kitchen: a can of organic black beans from Bolivia and a bag of organic walnuts, which turned out to be rancid, labeled "Product of Kazakhstan." "It just screams to my perhaps prejudiced, cynical, journalist's mind: Is there anything wrong with this?" Laufer says. imports organic soybeans from China, spices from India, and dried fruits from Turkey. And also because those products are arriving through supply chains that stretch to far corners of the world. He's an outright skeptic, especially because the organic label seems to him like a license to raise prices. Peter Laufer, a writer and professor of journalism at the University of Oregon, doesn't just wonder. Maybe you've wondered, while looking at the price tag on some organic produce, whether that label is telling the truth. ![]() ![]() VanderMeer was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, but spent much of his childhood in the Fiji Islands, where his parents worked for the Peace Corps.
